Demolition begins at old
Lumen Christi School

Demolition at the former Lumen Christi School and church on Orchard Street started Monday.

While work inside the school already had been underway for a while, the demolition that started this week was the first visible sign of the changes that will lead to construction of 10 single-family homes on the parcel.

This marks the first time in many years that new single-family homes will be available in Thiensville. The location atop the hill is within walking distance of downtown businesses.

The properties, being developed by Bonnilake Real Estate, are being constructed as home-lot packages. Each of the homes will have a two-car garage.

The historic 1940s church will be saved and rehabilitated. It will be used as an office building.

The proposed development will blend into the existing neighborhood, as requested by the neighbors.

Turkey Trot celebrates
15 years in Thiensville

The Junior Woman's Club of Mequon-Thiensville celebrated the 15th anniversary of the Turkey Trot Thursday evening.

About 60 people attended a reception at the Howard J. Schroeder American Legion Post in Mequon to mark the anniversary. Seven community organizations received a total of more than $33,000 in awards for projects.

The number of participants in the 5K run that has taken place on Thanksgiving morning in Thiensville has grown by leaps and bounds over the years. Nearly 1,500 runners and walkers lined up on the starting line last November.

Proceeds from the race have supported a variety of causes in surrounding communities. This year, the recipients included the Mequon Police Department K-9 Program, the Frank L. Weyenberg Library, Possibility Playground, Family Sharing of Ozaukee, Interfaith Caregivers of Ozaukee and Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Mailing from U.S. Census
will arrive by mail this month

In mid-March, homes across the country will begin receiving invitations to complete the 2020 Census.

Households will receive official Census Bureau mail between this Thursday, March 12, and March 20. It will provide detailed information on how to respond to the 2020 Census online, by phone or by mail.

Every 10 years, the United States conducts its Census, an official count of every person in the nation.

It is very important that every resident of the Village gets counted because a variety of funding formulas are tied to population. The districts of elected representatives for local and state offices, as well as Congress, are drawn based on the Census.

For a more-detailed overview, check out Census 101 and the Census Invites Everyone.

Backyard shed

Sheds, other structures
require Village approval

With spring just around the corner, residents may be thinking about adding an outdoor shed to store garden equipment, tools and other items. Sheds and other accessory structures must be approved by the Village's Plan Commission. The Historic Preservation Commission also must review the plans if the property is in Thiensville's Historic District. If approved, a building permit must be obtained.

Village Hall staff is happy to help you through the required steps. Plans that show where the shed will be placed, its size and what it will look like must be submitted at least two weeks prior to a meeting of the Plan Commission, which meets the first Tuesday of each month.

If Historic Preservation Commission review and approval is required, consideration of the Certificate of Appropriateness must occur first. The Historic Preservation Commission meets the second Wednesday of the month.

Details of the requirements for an accessory structure permit are available on the Village's website.

Fences, decks and driveway additions also require village review.

Please stop by Village Hall or call (262) 242-3720 with questions. We're here to help!
